Shopping in Luxembourg; a renewed experience

Until a few months ago, to find a shopping mall in Luxembourg, one had  to drive away from the city centre to reach City Concorde and Belle Etoile in the west of the city, or Kirchberg in the north. Since last May, a brand new shopping centre is aiming to be the beating heart of la Cloche d’Or, a newly built district, next to Gasperich, south of the city centre.  With 130 shops and restaurants, it is one of the most important malls in Luxembourg and the Grand Est region, and it aims to welcome 11 million customers within three years, including Luxembourgers, but also many tourists and border residents “frontaliers” from Thionville or Metz in France. the La Cloche d'Or shopping centre is resolutely modern and upmarket. It is visible in its design which includes huge skylights, giant mirrors and spacious alleys. Those used to shopping in France are familiar with Auchan supermarket. A leading name in France for food retail, the brand is inaugurating a brand new hypermarket concept, which, in response to online shopping, wants to attract customers back in store. Particular emphasis is placed on the merchandising of fresh products, organic products and bulk products without packaging, organic breads made on site, wine testing bar in the middle of the shelves, cheese, fish and meat sold behind a counter like in a small shop with personal advice.

Cloche d’Or is connected to the city centre by a bus line every 5 minutes during rush hour, which puts Luxembourg's main train station only 10 minutes away. A self-service bicycle station is located about 100 metres from the main entrance. Howald railway stop serves Luxembourg City and Lorraine region.

Another shopping heaven eagerly awaited by Luxembourgers, the Royal-Hamilius shopping centre, in the heart of the city, is gradually being unveiled in November. One after the other, major European brands are opening their doors. The Fnac is now open since 8th November and is expected to be a real commercial driver in terms of reading, music and video. As from 14th November, The premium supermarket Delhaize will fulfil daily needs, food to go/ready meals for all those working in the many surrounding offices. Finally, the end of November will see the arrival of the Galeries Lafayette, a commercial flagship of French-style art de vivre.

With a hanging garden, green spaces, a vast car park, apartments, offices, shops and restaurants the expectation is that Royal-Hamilius will “reconfigure the capital, and offer a welcoming place to meet, by extending the existing pedestrian and commercial area”. One will judge in the coming months if the result meets the expectation…
